If you are feeling a bit of whiplash regarding the cannabis and hemp laws in Virginia, you are definitely not alone! While the state recently paved the way for legal recreational cannabis, you are about to see many of your favorite hemp products vanish from store shelves.
To help clear things up, we are breaking down the official regulations outlined in the Virginia Legal Framework Summary and explaining exactly what these updates mean for you and The Hemp Spectrum.
Legal Weed Arrives, Hemp Disappears
According to the new state regulations, Virginia is actively preparing to launch general adult-use retail sales on July 1, 2027. In the meantime, hemp sales in Virginia will be drastically restricted. Starting on August 15th, 2026, hemp products will be strictly capped at a maximum of only 2mg of THC per package. This means many of the products you have come to rely on will suddenly vanish from store shelves.

The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) has been given full regulatory control over both marijuana and regulated hemp products. Under this new framework, adults 21 and older are allowed to legally possess up to two ounces of marijuana in a public place. The law also permits adults to cultivate up to four marijuana plants per household at their primary residence.
Despite these expanded recreational marijuana freedoms, the new 2mg per-package hemp limits severely restrict what we can physically stock in our store. After August 15th, The Hemp Spectrum will essentially only be able to sell broad-spectrum CBD and select microdose drinks over the counter.
Moving Forward: Your Favorites Are Moving Online
Due to the new, restrictive in-store regulations, we are super bummed to share that we will likely be closing our brick-and-mortar location soon. Instead, we will be shifting our focus entirely to our website until the upcoming federal ban takes effect.
But there is a major silver lining! While the state is cracking down on physical retail spaces, we can still legally ship THCA products and THC edibles straight to your door.
We highly encourage all of our local customers to make the leap and start shopping with us online so you never lose access to your go-to products.
Just a quick heads-up: moving forward, these restricted items will be explicitly marked as “online only” and will no longer be available for in-store pickup.

virginia hemp Businesses are Filing Injunction
Prior to the August 15th ban date, a group of Virginia hemp businesses are filing for an injunction in federal court to try to force a freeze on enforcement of the new regulatory definition of “legal” hemp products in Virginia. If the temporary injunction is granted, regulations would remain the same as they are now, rather than becoming more restrictive by August 15th. Our operations at The Hemp Spectrum would remain the same as they are now as well. While we are hoping for the best possible outcome, we have to plan according to what we know is true right now. We know there are a lot of unknowns and confusion on this topic, but will be sure to update you once we have more information.
